Someone (I believe it was David Daniel Bernard, mild-manner reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper) once described my writing style as "hopeful pessimism." That seems like as good a title as any for a chronicle of this point in my life.

Ah, mashed potatoes. A starch of no distinction. Does that come with a side of gub'ment cheese? Not yet I hope. Your papers can't have been processed quickly enough for you to be suckling at the teat of our welfare system.
